Happy 125th Birthday to Glasgow's Underground

S6M-02643 · Standard Motion · lodged by Stewart, Kaukab

Lodged on
20 Dec 2021
Heard / answered on
Unknown
That the Parliament congratulates Glasgow's underground on its 125th anniversary; understands that the Glasgow underground, which first opened to the public in 1896, is the third oldest underground railway in the world; further understands that, in its first year of full operation, it carried almost 10 million passengers; notes that the Glasgow Corporation purchased the subway in 1924, before electrifying the antiquated cable traction in 1935; further notes that the subway system was overhauled and modernised in 1974 by the Greater Glasgow Passenger Transport Executive, which later became SPT, and began a further programme of significant modernisation in 2011; welcomes this £288 million programme of works, supported by the Scottish Government, which, it understands, has funded the full-scale upgrade aimed at improving all services for the 40,000 daily passengers, and the 13 million who use the underground annually, and wishes the Glasgow underground, affectionately known locally as the Subway or the Clockwork Orange, every continued success for its next 125 years.
No division on record. Either the chamber agreed this motion without a vote, it was withdrawn before debate, or it predates 2011 — vote-by-vote records only run from then.
