West Lothian Presented with Food for Life Award for School Meals

That the Parliament congratulates the primary school catering staff of West Lothian Council on being awarded the Soil Association Scotland’s Bronze Food for Life Served Here award; acknowledges that this covers 66 primary schools, which serve a total of 8,600 meals daily; notes that the award recognises that the meals meet 11 key standards, including being at least 75% freshly prepared, using only sustainable fish, free-range eggs and meat that satisfies UK animal welfare standards and containing no undesirable additives, artificial trans fats or genetically modified ingredients; understands that the Food for Life Scotland programme has been funded by the Scottish Government since 2012 with the aim of supporting local authorities to get more local food on the table; believes that the award scheme offers a valuable framework to help councils to tackle health inequalities, support community food economies and serve sustainable school meals; commends all of the caterers involved on their dedicated efforts, and considers this award an especially appropriate achievement in the Year of Young People 2018.
