NHS Fife, First in Scotland to Provide Day Surgery for a Hip Replacement

S5M-15191 · Standard Motion · lodged by Gilruth, Jenny

Lodged on
18 Dec 2018
Heard / answered on
Unknown
That the Parliament congratulates NHS Fife on becoming the first NHS board to successfully pilot day surgery hip replacement; understands that the average length of hospital stay for this procedure in Fife is three days, but that this new technique reduces it to less than 12 hours; acknowledges that the enhanced recovery process was developed in Copenhagen and veers away from the traditional use of spinal anaesthetic in favour of a localised numbing; welcomes the assurance that patient safety and quality of care has never been compromised throughout the project; congratulates Michael Sullivan, who is from Kennoway, on being the first person in Scotland to undergo the new technique; sends Michael its best wishes for a speedy recovery, and hopes that NHS Fife enjoys every success in developing this and other such procedures.
