That the Parliament understands that RMT members working on the Caledonian Sleeper service are striking for 48 hours in a dispute with the operator, Serco; notes that Scottish Government awarded the sleeper franchise to Serco on 31 March 2015; understands that the strike started at 18:30 on 22 December 2015 after lengthy talks between the RMT and Serco failed to achieve agreement; further understands that the RMT suspended its original plan to ballot members in September after Serco agreed to an eight-week improvement plan, which the company subsequently failed to abide by; shares the RMT’s concerns regarding a number of defects on rolling stock in service, including the reliability of fire alarms, which it believes compromise the safety of both staff and passengers; supports the RMT’s opposition to the indemnity clauses in the franchise agreement for the sleeper service, which could see Serco reimbursed for around £300,000 of passenger revenue; condemns the recent, reported poor service of the Caledonian Sleeper service, which it considers to be due to a failure on Serco’s part to meaningfully address the issues raised by the RMT, and urges Serco to work with the RMT to reach a viable solution to the dispute.
