To ask the Scottish Government how many qualified instructors have been employed by the Scottish Prison Service in each year since 2011, broken down by (a) prison and (b) specialist area.

The answer

I have asked Colin McConnell, Chief Executive of the Scottish Prison Service (SPS), to respond. His response is as follows:
“Qualified instructors are defined as individuals employed by the SPS either in the role of civilian instructor or officer instructor whose duties are associated with the delivery of activities which engage prisoners in work based activity. Providing instruction and guidance in relation to performing tasks while maintaining control and discipline within the environment.
The difference between the civilian instructor and officer instructor roles is the requirement of the officer instructor to undertake the duties of a residential officer if operationally required.
*The figures provided in the following tables for qualified instructors reflect the data held for a point in time of 31 March in each of the requested years.
**Within the following tables, qualified instructors whose duties are associated with catering fall under the facilities functional area. All other qualified instructors fall under the broad functional area of activities.”
