Meeting of the Parliament 11 March 2026 [Draft]
I take Alex Cole-Hamilton’s point that we are not clinicians and would not spell out clinical practice in the bill. However, I want to share an example that speaks to the complexity of the issue and shows why we need to talk through all these things. In a case in Oregon, a drug failed to kill the patient, and that patient never repeated the attempt. That might suggest that, if the procedure fails, the doctor should try to preserve life. However, someone might want to ask a doctor not to intervene if they were experiencing seizures or vomiting and their life was in the balance.
I am making the point that this is a grey area. I am not saying that the bill will set out clinical practice, but we must acknowledge that this is really complicated and complex—we are not talking about a simple procedure.
